I've watched this video several times trying to figure out what went wrong. Initially I thought maybe his seat post dropped and then the bike lunged to his right before forcing him to overcorrect and crash to his left.
But then I found this 1080 version where you can see his seat swing to the right of his shorts for no apparent reason. I doesn't look like he unclipped (did you see that nasty crash in Sunday's CX race where Ryan Kamp slipped out of the pedals at the start? ouch) but maybe his chain slipped?

I came to post the same and ask the same; his left foot does something a little odd; as if his crank broke or maybe the rear wheel buckled? Very, very odd. The crank looks fine once the bike comes to rest tho.

Maybe he's way on the nose of his saddle and his rear tire gets a bit too much sand underneath, causing a fishtail?

That mov file is helpful; the whole frame moves out behind him. If he wasn't so stable beforehand I'd buy the fishtail theory. it is really very hard to tell what happened, to me it looks like his rear tire, likely a tubular, exploded (pow), while going over the sand, causing a terrible chain reaction

possibly the front tire is the one that exploded, I would bet on the rear tho.
