Watched the last 15k of Paris-Nice stage 1. Looked like it was going to be a sprinters stage until Jumbo lit it up on the last (relatively small) climb. Laporte was a great signing. If I understood his post race interview (Bob Roll was translating on the fly so I couldn't hear LaPorte clearly) he seemed to be attributing his improved form to 3 weeks at altitude camp.

what was really odd to see was riders tossing off bottles and trash before that climb.  There were no spectators hanging around to get the stuff.  I thought the UCI was cracking down on littering, though not to the absurd lengths of a few years ago.  

They were actually tossing the bottles in a zone that was marked (in french) for that effect. I do get the irony of not having spectators to pick it up though.

I wonder if it has to do with the possibility that riders then are wearing not necessarily the closest fitting jerseys, not a very stretchy jerseys at that.

In the coors classic video, lemond looks pretty lean, and much of the time he's wearing a tight fitting lycra jersey and lycra cycling shorts.

And then there's the doping angle.  I don't remember all the drugs and things they trigger, but I do recall one local doper who seemed to gain 15 pounds or more the year he went deep into doping--and was climbing better.  And another local doper who after being away for several months came back far more muscle bound and bulky and with a much thicker neck.  

I think there was something about maybe cortisone abuse resulting in water retention and guys having pretty puffy faces.
