Nope, just rode the bike into the barrier.

For me the bigger takeaway is that, if you're going to go down, be the first one to eat shit, not the last. It seems like the further back you are in the domino chain, the rawer the deal you get.

This issue is one that most local racers don't seem to understand. When you have a guy who can crush you in the sprint, make him work. Everyone knew going to the line with Degenkolb was a losing proposition. OPQS had the legs to try something before the critical hill. Once the gap was made, Degenkolb was out of domestiques and no one was interested in helping.

If this happened locally, chances are the move would have been chased down while the sprinter waited for his moment.

Stybar also wins because cross skillz. Respecting the out of the saddle on a foot wide strip of flat stone.

P.S. Why doesn't Degenkolb get DQ'd for taking his hands off the bars and shoving? Every GoPro I see he's got his mitts on someone. Normalizing this behavior is bad for all racing.

I think it was less than a foot. More like 15cm at most.

Just about everyone behind was able to do the same. And Degenkolb put in an amazing chase to get what he did.

One of the reasons he hasn't been DQ'd is that the 15-minute protest period elapsed several days before the videos have been published. I also bet that many of his fellow sprinters are guilty of the same, and their teammates are loath to single out Degenkolb for fear their guy will get punished eventually.
