Local Dopers

Email from NYSBRA re local drug testing:

"...Here is a list of those who have already stepped up and donated.  We would like to give them a little recognition:

Paging Mr Mengoni, Mr Mengoni! Do they even think they have a problem?

What do people think about Kissena ponying up? At the very least some "donations"; Marc could get us genetic analyzer; Stokes a centrifuge; Adam N. a cyclotron particle accelerator.

I plan to bring a donation up at the first '14 board meeting. The question is how we raise/account for/administer the funds.

I was thinking something along the lines of a checkbox -- that is by default not selected -- that allows members to donate $5 to the NYSBRA anti-doping fund. We could put the checkbox on any of our Wufoo forms like membership registration, bottle orders, holiday party sign-up, etc. Wufoo would automatically keep track of every donation so the accounting would be very simple.

It would be nice to see such a checkbox on BikeReg forms next to the VeloNews signups, but that's a bit beyond our purview.

Anyway, it's just one idea.
Wheeeeeeeeee!

@Jeff, I talked with Charlie about putting the checkbox on Bikereg and he's on board.  Money will go to NYSBRA's Ride Clean fund.
Ha. I just checked my asthma meds: If I use one of them and a diuretic is found in my system it's a violation! Sweet I'm f'n pro! Anyway, USADA linked to this seach and I found it easy to use: http://www.globaldro.com/m/us-en/search/search.aspx
Whew....I just checked...and I'm clear...worried for a second there.

[User Type] is collected for statistical purposes only.
If you participate in multiple sports, each substance must be searched for each sport to ensure specific sport rules are addressed.
Select the [Nation of Purchase] carefully. Brands sold in different countries may contain different ingredients, leading to a different WADA Prohibited List status.
In the [Search] field, you may enter a brand name, an individual active ingredient, or a DIN.
You may enter a partial string, but make sure you match your search result carefully to the substance you are searching.

Owens, I'm in the same boat. I presume they're referring to the following (and not coffee)

Diuretics[edit]

The following diuretics, and chemicals with similar structure or biological activity are banned:

I increasingly hate the idea of testing at the amateur level, mostly because I'm so annoyed that it is necessary. When racers start getting busted for THC and medication that normal ppl need, we can all thank these asshats from BH and Mengoni and who knows where else who are so delusional that they think it's not despicable to dope for their stupid hobby.
Well put Ryan.
^ That said, I spoke with Charlie yesterday and the "donate to NYSBRA Race Clean" is going onto the L&C Bikereg pages.

Toss in a post-race coffee or two's worth, eh?
Yeah. The idea that cat 3's and 4's are doping also gives me a great excuse for sucking tho.
Douche

It is about time !!!!!  Man o man....every year I consider plugging my fat as in the top 5 and getting my upgrade points....and then shit like this happens.  I like the IV's...
Their website is currently down, what drugs did he take?
Modafinil.

edit: I know of people receiving prescriptions for that for ADD/ADHD type stuff (it's a technical term, 'stuff').  Maybe Martes was trying to burn the midnight oil?
I don't care why anybody is taking anything.  Get a TUE or quit racing.  It's not like the list is a secret

there is a freaking iPhone app for goodness sake.

If by "midnight oil" you mean body fat and increase his fast-twitch, you might be on to something.

The only question is why did it take so long?  He accepted the suspension a month after the race and we're hearing about it five months later.

I agree @Wump really weird that it would take so long.
Maybe there was an appeals process?
@Ryan if there was it's weird they would say he "accepted" a provisional suspension...

I cannot imagine that "Local doping" doesn't end badly for the doper, even if they never get caught.

Personal story ahead (but hey, this is the internet where we feel free to share all sorts of personal things):

I’ve been sort of peripherally following this debate for a while. Back about 6 years ago I was 35 pounds heavier than I am now. A health screening at work indicated a bad cholesterol ratio and a sky high triglyceride count (about 400). I was always tired, had low sex drive, and was always having sugar crashes. I went to my doctor and had blood work done which confirmed the bad cholesterol and triglyceride numbers but also came back with a very low T # (about 170). My doctor suggested I change my diet and get some exercise which he surmised would help on all counts.

6 years later my latest blood work is superb, I feel much healthier, and I again participate in a sport that I loved when I was younger. I’m pretty proud of all that, but my T counts haven’t really budged - latest test was 185.

From what I’ve read there are health consequences of low T but of course it’s hard to be confident that the studies aren’t clandestinely funded by drug companies. But I still have some of the symptoms that I think relate to low T like a diminished sex drive and persistent boob and belly flab. So in my latest conversation with my doctor we discussed the ramifications of replacement therapy. Despite the plethora of misinformation he feels I would be a good candidate for the therapy (other risk factors being low). I told him I wasn’t interested.

There was a story last year about a guy who’s TUE for replacement therapy was dismissed because even though the symptoms being treated were verified, there was no defined cause. I’d rather compete clean (without a TUE) and not have any worries about getting involved in any of that kind of craziness. Nevermind the risks associated with the therapy.

So, while I still listen to the back and forth in the debate, I keep it shelved and try to balance the worries I have about long term consequences of low T against the fun and camaraderie I get from bike racing.

Jim, thanks for sharing your experience.  I think your doctor must have gotten the T test wrong, as it takes peerless balls to be as open with a group of people as you were here.  Chapeau.

That's a tough call to make and I applaud you for sticking to your principles.  I just wish that the structure of drug testing in this sport didn't force you to choose between your health and your hobby.
Jim,
Brave.  Huge balls.  Maybe the reveal will nudge you up over 200.

I'm curious.  what about the supposed other part of the equation, estrogen levels?  Have you and your doctor looked into that?

Thanks for sharing Jim.

This happens to be in the paper today:

Thanks guys.

JP, I hadn't seen that article and we hadn't discussed it. I'll take a look at my blood numbers tomorrow and see if the estrogen levels are noted.

Mike, yeah that's the article that got me thinking about it again.
Best line from Cesar:

How did it get into your body?

It may sound like a lie, but I don't know. I'm not a rider that used any substances to race, ever. I'm allergic to Caffeine. I used regular GNC supplements, because I'm aware of the risk of the unknown or hidden. In the past I tried an energy drink and my heart rate went up, I didn't finish that race. That was at Dairylands

OMG this is great too:

How did it get to your body then?

I told you I don't know

What is your explanation for this?

Maybe my body produces it, a combination of supplements maybe? But I don't know. Really I don't know.

HIS BODY NATURALLY PRODUCES MODAFINIL!!!  That's too rich.

"GNC regular supplements". GNC's banned substance list comes from the Siberian bear fighting league.
