If you have only one wheel that you use for trainer rides, outdoor training rides and races....then power tap is all good.  If not, then the technology has moved on...you can still use your power tap as a bookend for your cd collection.
@marc - I have a very nice power tap wheel for sale. It works very well and I use it for training. 32 spokes and Mavic open pro rim.
Yacks - that first picture shows the chain rings installed incorrectly. The large chain ring should be on the outside of the P2P spider.

Marc - Each PM system has its adherents. Whitey has 2 powertap wheels, one for racing and one for training. They are easy to swap and he doesn't have to worry about BB standards. Pedal based systems should be easy to transfer from bike to bike and they can show left and right leg power. Crank based systems can also show left right power (except for Stages because it is only on one side). Both pedal and crank systems are more expensive because there are essentially 2 power meters, one for each crank/pedal. Crank spider systems can estimate left right power based on position in pedal stroke and are less money than the crank and pedal systems (except stages). For all of the ones that are around / attached to the crankset you don't have to worry about what wheels you use, race, train, beater, cross, road, etc. Right now the price hierarchy from low to high is Stages (one crank), PowerTap (hub), P2P (spider), Quarq (spider), Garmin Vector (pedals), Rotor (both cranks), Pioneer (both cranks - price somewhat unknown) , SRM (spider) (I left off Polar pedals)
Cheese and crackers...I have the older version of the Sram Rival crank...so I am now bidding on a newer version on Ebay...so's the Stages will match...Doesn't make any sense to pay Stages $200 more for the crankset when you can buy one online for $170 and have that extra non-drive side arm.  Comes in handy should u want to sell your Stages meter and still have a complete crankset or when your meter needs to be shipped back for repair...I'm always thinking....
@yacks. $170 seems steep for ebay/rival crankset. For reference I picked up an ultegra 6600 crankset for $18 (+12 shipping).
Admittedly it is silver and 175mm and that combo is less popular, but hey - there must be cheaper sets on ebay.
I found a brand new set with bottom bracket and it was just resisted = no previous bids for $120. That sounds fair
Now that I better understand the options, the power2max 52/36 sounds like a brilliant setup that I would be happy to acquire.  Unfortunately, Stokes is correct that these meters are a four-digit investment (assuming he meant numbers rather than fingers) for folks like me who would need new cranks.  My hobby fund is not currently a four-digit fund.  I hope we can work out a power sponsor for 2015!
in the end i believe i have to agree with yacks approach, and head towards a stages meter.
OK - if we reach 10 units purchased, in addition to the free chain rings, there will be a 10% discount too. Depending on unit purchased it's about $100 off. Note, if you need a bottom bracket they sell BBs for some but not all BB standards.

Here is the list of interested individuals. If you could indicate if you plan to purchase this route or are going a different direction that would help so that I can determine logistics.

Ian Ellis
David Stokes (Ian and David have placed orders which count towards our discount level)

Zolan
Joaquin
Nelson
Duncan (don't know where the discount puts you)
Yacks? (check out the BB options)

based on comments, fence sitters:
Bertucco
Josh Caesar

If I am the swing vote to trigger the 10%...I'm in.

Anyone? calling Joaquin, Nelson, Duncan, Bertucco, Caesar. Anyone else?
Alas, I'm not in the position to pull the trigger right now. I may be sometime later this year but if it's a matter of securing a specific number of orders right now I'm going to have to decline.
Ive fallen off the fence...not going to be able to pull the trigger right now either.
Craig,
I can be in.
Craig, sorry, i had replied on another thread somehow.  I am thinking the stages makes more sense for me.

Whole lotta this going on!

calling Joaquin and Caesar - any one else?
This is still for the P 2 Max? At 5 buyers we would get free Praxis rings, right?

Yes for the Power 2 Max power meter. At 5 buyers we get free Praxis rings.
I'm in.
Great. I'm coordinating with P2M on purchasing logistics.
I still hope that we'll pursue a power sponsor for 2015, though!  'Twould be a major victory.

That's the idea. This is just the warmup to a more robust sponsor relationship.
This is where Bertucco asks if we can get Cyclops to sponsor us again.
(sorry Marc, your Powertap obsession is endearing, ya know we love you)

Still giggling
The power tap looks great parked next to this...
I'm about to call this P2M thing off. We're at 4 people right now. Give me a holler if you are interested.

writes the guy who advocates for virtual power readings.  Even pastafarians know better.
