Kissena Club Championships
There's a bike fit guy at HSS I know. I could ask him if he knows the docs.JohnMalcolmson said:Will crashed and broke his elbow. Anyone have ortho surgeon recommendations/contacts at https://www.hss.edu/?
Hoping there are some good pics and a good story in the injuries thread.
Will - hope you mend quickly.
That is very good advice and nothing you'd get flack for on the Kissena I know. Sometimes the best advice is what you don't really want to hear.ChristinaWoolston said:I'm probably going to get flack for posting this instead of texting offline but kind of wanted it to be seen by the gang.
More experienced members can attest to what its like to race a mens cat 5 race, as can you. But as a female I can say that Mens Cat 5 racing is very different than a Women's 4/5 field. I raced one road race in CT this summer with a relatively small mens field and found it terrifying, at that point I had 3 crits and 5 road races under my belt so felt pretty confident that I could stay upright and hang with the pack.
I'm all for jumping head first into racing and events where I'm not overly confident that I'll excel at, but always consider safety. If this is her first race ever, it might not be the best idea. And looking at race predictor, it looks like this race will be the first one for over half the field. If I was still a 5 and if I was racing this, I'd probably only do it if I knew I could count on a steady wheel or two or a KCC teammate.

- Ricky is our Cat 4 club champ
- No women's champ this year due to lack of entries.
Nice work Ricky and JP, let me know your jersey sizes.
Sorry to hear of your crash Will. Hope you heal up quick
that would be hot...and I'd totally wear itJohnMalcolmson said:I'll make you a jersey Yackfoo.
Good Lord, never race a Men's Cat 5 race if you don't have to! Yikes!Jules said:That is very good advice and nothing you'd get flack for on the Kissena I know. Unfortunately our CAT 5 women/an would have to under the current setup. Although I agree that CAT 5 races are dangerous, and perhaps even more dangerous for women (per Cristina’s note), and even more dangerous for women with limited racing experience, I think there is a broader issue that needs to be addressed. why don’t have gender specific races for both men and women in our club championship? Can we push Charlie to add female heats to next year’s fall classic?JillWhite said:Good Lord, never race a Men's Cat 5 race if you don't have to! No question, the club championship setup was not ideal and unfair to women -- as the only way to participate was in a men's field.
Charlie does a lot for cycling and for Kissena -- as those races are sponsored by Kissena, which allows a pretty great story: The Kissena cycling club puts on about 30 road races, a major cyclocross race, etc.
We should always be very hesitant to push Charlie to do anything else. His bandwidth is full.
Also important, Charlie ran a women only field in PP for a couple years. I wish we could still run it. It did not prove economically feasible.
I do encourage you to figure out ways to help Charlie or even put on a race yourself. There was conversation a few weeks ago about a 2018 Governor's Island race. Greg, get involved, jumpstart that effort again. Run all the women's fields. Make it NY State Crit Championship. Make it Kissena's Championship. Make it awesome.
Step up, set it up, and we will help you. Good luck.
Regarding the women's field in Prospect Park, a number of people have pressed Charlie for it. Including Brooklyn based women in CRCA and members of the Brooklyn Tri Club (who were very pushy about it). The verdict is that its unsafe to run more than 3 races in Prospect Park as its such a short and tight course, there may also be USAC restrictions involved with it. Therefore the more profitable fields take precedence.
Whether one of the above becomes an option or if you are able to put something together at Governor’s Island, I believe the board would find a way to support it. Speaking of which, Kissena needs dedicated members who want to contribute to the club and the cycling community to take part in the board. I encourage you and anyone else who wants to roll up their sleeves on this or other issues to run for the board in the upcoming elections.
You would look good in a club champion jersey, right?
This Saturday's Kissena Fall Classic in Prospect Park is our official club road champs. The club awards custom champion jerseys to the first Kissena riders in the Cat 4 and 1/2/3 fields. Last year Ricky and J.P. won in their respective fields. Do you have what it takes to dethrone them? Will this be your lucky day?
Whether going for the win or just wanting to have a good time and get coffee afterwards, come race the Kissena Fall Classic. As usual, Charlie will need reg volunteers (you race for free), contact him if you can help.
Each jersey must have minimum two contestants in order to produce a winner.
Jerseys are:
- Women's Cat 4 Club Champ
- Men's Cat 4 Club Champ
- Men's P/1/2/3 club champ
