Any number of reasons.
All the major bergs had been climbed already. There were, I think, only two left, and they weren't hard.
Because if he did the minimum, he'd likely win the race.
If he didn't take a pull, the others would work him over, he'd get dropped.
His team wasn't close to pulling back the break. if a DQS-led chase was 30s behind and steamrolling, he could make the excuse. But I don't think they were.

None of them had teams chasing. Bennet's DQS team was chasing.Mark Taylor said:the same could of been said about, matthew’s ,

more complicated than a chase , they were trying to send riders across , yes , not a concerted effort until he vomited ,then it was to late ,

We give some grief to cycling commentators but I have to say they are infinitely better than most track/marathon commentators. This one is particularly bad though:

The cycling podcast interviewed Marco Haller this week ,gave great insight , explaining that his attacks were simply to get a head- start into the climbs , he worked out he was the worst climber of the 6 , that was the only way hope could get to the finish and fight for the podium , which were the teams goals ,

both Catalano and Horner are super specific on how Wout had no teammates, similar with MVdP. It is clear Asgreen benefited even from the teammates behind.

Watching Horner kvetch about all the things Stage 4 Pais Vasco is actually kinda fun.
It does illustrate the Jumbo problem, and arguably MVdP problem, that some of these guys are so good that they have not become tactically savvy.
It was a theme of other riders' post race interviews too "did not really understand what Jumbo was doing" -- they literally abandoned the race leader.

I keep saying it but Horner is the most entertaining commentator out there right now.

Agreed, I didn’t really warm to him on the NBC coverage , but no one looks good on that formatJules said:I keep saying it but Horner is the most entertaining commentator out there right now.
he analysis is spot on ,
as a side note , sometimes i really enjoy watching a race after i know the result , you sought of view the race in a different way
