A retired pro, maybe it was Andy Hampsten, suggested that when he raced, GC riders would have one or two pilot fish ahead of them in the finales of flat stages. It was this pros feeling that a big issue is that in more modern times, some teams put their entire squads at the front in the finale of flat stages, making it harder for the sprinter teams to do their thing, and causing congestion that leads to crashes.
That crash was at 4k to go, and it appears the entire Ineos team is massed at the front.
Though Hampsten's 1986 team, the all-conquering La Vie Claire, put their top six riders in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 13th, and 23rd. And looking at the stage results, there were only three traditional-looking sprint stage results. Definitely a different time.

I don't think that's it. I think the GC teams need to agree that they're not going to clog the front with their entire team in the finale. It is kind of crazy what they do now; put everyone at the front until the last possible moment, then move over and fade back to get out of the way of the sprint.Jules said:Let the gc guys sit up at 5km to go.

'even though disc brakes are better, I chose rim brakes. Discs are better, but I don't want to take unnecessary risks on my daily rides, so I chose rim brakes. Rim brakes also result in lighter bikes, easier to work on, easier to travel with, but disc brakes are better. They are the future. Maybe if I had lots of long, technical descents, I'd want disc brakes. Because they are better. But I don't live where I'm doing long, technical descents on a regular basis.'

I used to work in a bike shop with a mechanic who was also a part-time professional classical musician. He subbed for the NY Philharmonic, pit orchestras on Broadway and more (he later became a full-time musician). He kept the radio tuned to rock stations most of the time because, while he clearly loved classical music, there were some arrangements, conductors, orchestras he hated with a passion. If he had the radio tuned to WQXR and they put on something from a source he hated, curses would be yelled, tools thrown, and rock 'n roll came back on.

Again, enjoyed immensely, specially hearing spanish in the context of bike racing. It is a great look at how hard it can be to get a rider high up on general classification. Way harder than it seems, when we watch the races.
Something that did stick out was how disorganized and unprepared, and how little redundancy, the directors in the cars appeared to be. Most racing mistakes can be chalked up to them.
For example, my job can be full on chaotic, but would be in so much trouble if my teams/squads were so unprepared and unsuccessful.
It also suggests how important strategy, direction, and execution are at the grand tour or pro tour level. There is no room for extra anything, the races are so taxing, that it is basically impossible to recover from a mistake.

Hahaha, so true! In my 20s when I was racing elite(ish) in South America, we had this expression: "Los Ojos Metidos" which loosely translates to "The Sunken Eyes" or "Dead Eyes" -- Enric totally looks the part, there's nothing healthy about top formMark Taylor said:
